life preserver

— a poem by chase klavon

the subdued taste of yesterday lingers on my tongue

so i lick my wounds until they stop seeping regret

bloodied and wounded

feebly frail

i howl at the moon like an ailing fox

praying to whoever will listen

for my scars stop scaring me

leading me down the wrong path until it is too late to turn back

how i wish

the stars tended to shine through the coagulated clouds in times of despair

to lead the stragglers to solace

for when they are lost

they wish to be reminded that they will always be found

even if it takes floating adrift before they are able to tread the sea
